RV Trip Guide Toms River, NJ To Vero Beach, Fl
The Entire Trip
The Entire Trip |
For our second trip to Vero Beach Fl and our winter home at Sunshine Travel RV Resort, we decided to document our trip here on the blog. Pictured above is the the journey which we will break down by legs. As we progressed, we made some "walk around" videos so you could see some of the parks. Check them out below. We do have a small video of our entrance to Hershey as it was pouring, but unfortunately none for Fort Chiswell so we added a few pictures. Betty Ann and I like to travel "easy" so we try to keep our legs shorter allowing us to sleep in and arrive early. Everyone has their own limits. Some RVers we know can drive for hours and reach the spots quickly where as we like the slow-down approach. We travel in a 2018 Georgetown XL 369 gas motorhome towing a 4 door Jeep Wrangler recently purchased. We had a two door Wrangler but realized after a years use it wasn't practical. We will talk about the trip and give you our unbiased opinions. Upon reaching The Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee we will spend a week exploring the mountains and that area. We will cover that in a separate blog post.
LEG 1 Toms River NJ to Hershey Park PA
LEG 1 Toms River to Hershey Park Camping Resort |
Leg 1 was easy as it took us from our storage area in Toms River, NJ to Hershey Park Camping Resort. Starting with a full tank, the 167 mile trip was easy taking us to Hershey without needing a fuel stop. This was an overnight stop and when we arrived it was pouring rain that made our first try of a walk around impossible but for a small entrance clip. We RVers know how much fun rain can be but with our pull through site it was just a quick hook up of water and electric before leaving the next morning. This resort is very popular in season and you should make reservations early for the best spots. They have a large store as well as shuttle service to the park.

Leg 2 Hershey to Endless Caverns RV Resort |
Leg 2 started out much better with a sunny but chilly day from Hershey to Endless Caverns RV Resort, but first we decided to hit the Flying J in Carlisle PA on I81. I try to keep the needle above the halfway mark and if I see an easy station even before that I will hit it. We have a Pilot Gas Card that gives you 5 cents off a gallon but it also does not stop when it reaches $100. The card allows you to keep filling until done. We also use our Cap One Venture Card at any other stations.
We definitely recommend this station as it's easy in and has two RV lanes.
A 182 mile trip had us arriving mid-afternoon. Easy pull through spot but the day was so beautiful we decided to unhook the Jeep and have an early dinner at Southern Kitchen in New Market, VA near Luray. We were there last year and they good old down home cooking. When near New Market or a quick place off I81 this is a great place.

Fort Chiswell RV Park just off I81 and I77 is nestled in the pretty area of Max Meadows and is a great place to overnight. Easy pull throughs with no need to unhook and clean and easy access.
We were not able to make a walk around video so we are posting a few pictures.

We left Saturday morning for the 174 mile drive to Two Rivers Landing RV Resort in Sevierville, TN for a week to explore the Great Smoky Mountains, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg but we will cover that in a separate blog post. We made a fuel stop shortly after leaving Fort Chiswell at Flying J Wytheville just off I81. This station is recommended by us as well for its easy access and RV lanes.
Two Rivers Landing is on the French Broad River and is a small one street resort with pull in sites for motorhomes along the river and back in sites opposite them. This place is clean and kept pristine and with the Prevosts', Entegras' Tiffins as well as our Georgetown proving why. Everyone I spoke to loves it here. Many are heading south as well. They have a pool, sitting room, as well as laundry facilities.

Leg 5 Two Rivers RV Resort to Harvest Moon RV Park |
After a terrific week in the Great Smoky Mountains we left Two Rivers Landing around 11AM for
the 177 mile drive to Harvest Moon RV Park. Be prepared when you leave as you need to make a left turn on Hwy 66 a four lane split highway to reach I40 West. Once on I40 we made a stop for fuel at the Flying J in Knoxville Exit 369. Perfect stop with 2 RV fuel lanes. Definitely recommend. Easy trip down I40 and then I75 (except for the 30 min delay due to a traffic accident). Once you reach Exit 306 in GA its a right on GA140 then a left on Poplar St. The park is a few feet down on the right.

Leg 6 Harvest Moon RV Park To Fair Harbor RV Park

Our next overnight stop was Fair Harbor RV Park in Perry, GA. It is a 200 site 30/50 amp park with 100 full hook up pull through sites. very clean and neat. There is a nice pond where they have many sites placed. It's right off I75 in Georgia Exit 135. Easy off and back on. We made one fuel stop at the Flying J in Jackson GA. We recommend this stop for fuel. Easy in and out. In the morning, we topped off with propane. One note although we did not need the full amount we were charged the price for a full size barbecue tank.

Leg 7 Fair Harbor RV Park To Travelers Campground
Fair Harbor RV Park To Travelers Campground |
We left Fair Harbor RV Park around 10:30 AM and after 2 plus hours we made a fuel stop at the Flying J in Lake Park GA at Exit 2 just before the GA/FL border. Another great stop. Total trip with a lunch stop was approx 3 1/2 hours. Travelers Campground located in Alachua FL is a large easy off.... easy on campground. Exit 399 off of I75 and a quick left brings you up to the Waffle House where you make a sharp left turn on April Blvd. Follow it parallel to I75 brings you there.
They have an area set up for overnights all paved and with full hookups. Cable TV (very good) wifi (not so much) but the farm with live animals was very cool as Nina will attest! Pool, Laundry, Dog Park, Propane etc. Check the video to see Nina meet the pig! The sites can be a real issue leaving if the rig next to you has a dually truck sticking out! Some others were worrying as well. The sites are large but BA had to guide me out and it was close!

As I said above, the sites can be a real issue leaving if the rig next to you has a dually truck sticking out! Some others were worrying as well. The sites are large but BA had to guide me out and it was close! Once we left Travelers Campground for Sunshine Travel in Vero Beach it was an easy drive on I75 South to the Florida Turnpike then to Florida 528 that runs past the Orlando Airport to I95 and then south to Exit 156 in Sebastian. From there its a left on 512 then a right into Sunshine Travel!

We will do a separate walk around of Sunshine in a future post. We hope this helps anyone who is looking to take a trip in this direction. We used the internet blogs to help us plan this as well as last years trip south.
